A favicon is a small image (16 x 16 pixels) that is displayed inside (beside the URL address) a browser’s address bar.
Favicons can also appear in a browser’s dropdown “Favourite” or Bookmarks listing when a site (with favicon) is bookmarked.
Favicons are very useful if you want to brand your blog or website. Through long term use, your site visitors will identify the favicon with your site.
Below is an example of a favicon inside a browser’s address bar and a book mark dropdown listing:

Creating a Favicon
Create a small image (16 x 16 pixels) using Fireworks, Photoshop or GIMP and save it under either the JPG, PNG or GIF file format. Once this is done, convert the file into .ico format using Prodraw.com’s free online file conversion utility.
Add Favicon to Your Blog
1. Upload the favicon.ico file to your blog’s root directory using your FTP program or cpanel File Manager.
2. Next, place the following codes between the opening <head> tag and the closing </head> tag in your blog’s header.php file (WP Appearance/Editor):
<link rel=”shortcut icon” href=”http://www.yoursitenamehere.com/favicon.ico” mce_href=”http://www.yoursitenamehere.com/favicon.ico”/>
Refresh your browser and you should see your favicon inside your browser’s address bar.
